Livno cheese: the first BiH product protected in the EU

Experts stressed that branding local products with designations of origin and geographical indications is key to keeping products from Bosnia and Herzegovina competitive and to preserving local production. Designations of origin not only confirm the authenticity and uniqueness of a product, they also help producers reach new markets and support the sustainable development of local communities.

Livanjski sir is a protected product at EU level, shown with the Protected Geographical Indication logo

Livno cheese, made in the specific climate and geography of Livno, carries a protected designation of geographical origin, which has made it a recognisable symbol of Bosnian and Herzegovinian tradition and quality internationally. Thanks to this protection, Livno cheese is sold in 15 European countries and the United States, where it has established itself as a premium product from the region.

“Livno cheese is the first product from the Balkans outside the EU to receive this protection,” said Zdravko Markov, Executive Director of Mljekara Livno. The designation makes the product more recognisable, strengthens its market value and assures consumers that they are buying an authentic product with a long tradition.

Bosnia and Herzegovina currently has 12 registered products with designations of origin, geographical indications or traditional speciality guaranteed status, which shows growing interest in and awareness of protecting local products. Such branding encourages local production and preserves specific traditional methods, which also supports the development of rural areas and helps BiH products achieve long-term sustainability and international recognition.
